Of course, everyone knows Palance steals the movie, but it’s a sweeter and funnier piece overall than you may remember. Crystal stars as an average guy who channels his mid-life crisis into a week on a cattle drive with two of his best buddies, played by Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby. City Slickersīilly Crystal was at the peak of his fame with this 1991 blockbuster comedy that was so popular that it won co-star Jack Palance an Oscar. Consider this an entry that recommends watching all of them. There are several Chaplin classics on HBO Max. City LightsĬharlie Chaplin helped define comedy in his string of major motion pictures, and City Lights is one of his most beloved works, a romantic comedy that centers Chaplin’s Tramp character in a love story with a blind girl and a friendship with an alcoholic millionaire. Most people reading this guide can probably quote Caddyshack by heart but it’s a good time to watch it again just to revisit your favorite scenes and characters, or to perfect that Bill Murray impression you’ve been working on. One of the most beloved comedies of all time teed off in 1980 when the Harold Ramis-directed ensemble classic landed in theaters.

Some of it is a little dated now but the acting and writing will always be brilliant.

Holly Hunter, William Hurt, and Albert Brooks are fantastic in this smart movie about the people who bring viewers the news. Brooks’s career is the 1987 romantic dramedy that was so acclaimed it was nominated for Best Picture and was included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress a few years ago. It’s a great film, and one that Martin Scorsese even named as one of the ten best films of the 1990s. Not only did it launch Anderson’s career, Bottle Rocket also introduced the world to the Wilson brothers, Owen and Luke. Made for almost nothing in the heart of Texas by an unknown young man named Wes Anderson, his 1996 comedy changed the indie landscape. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are phenomenal as a gay couple forced to jump through hoops for their son’s new in-laws, played wonderfully by Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest. Mike Nichols’ remake of the beloved La Cage aux Folles is a joyous comedy about acceptance and love that still works well today (which is not something you can about a lot of mid-‘90s comedies).

Reuniting with most of his favorite colleagues and friends after the success of Waiting for Guffman, Guest and his ensemble dropped what is quite simply one of the best comedies ever made. Movies don’t get funnier than Christopher Guest’s brilliant mockumentary about people obsessed with their canine counterparts. Say his name three times! Tim Burton’s second film proved how quirky and weird his influence would be on the film landscape, telling the story of two recently deceased ghosts (Alec Baldwin & Geena Davis) who end up bothered by a cranky poltergeist named Beetlejuice, unforgettably played by Michael Keaton. The great ensemble also includes Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader. Set in the summer of 1987, it’s the story of a recent college grad (Jesse Eisenberg) who ends up having to put his life on hold to work at a rundown amusement park in his hometown. Greg Mottola wrote and directed an excellent period dramedy that was released in 2009 but feels almost like something Cameron Crowe could have made in the ‘80s. Carell is great but the supporting cast really makes this one, including Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, and Catherine Keener. Steve Carell can try to go dramatic all he wants, but he will always be remembered for having his chest hair waxed.

Judd Apatow has made several funny movies and a great TV show ( Freaks & Geeks) but this remains his best and funniest movie front to back. The film became one of the biggest hits of 1979, really shaping how comedies would be made for the next few years. The great Dudley Moore stars as a middle-aged man who becomes obsessed with a gorgeous woman who he doesn’t even know, played by Bo Derek. Some of its humor is a bit dated, but there’s not enough love for Blake Edwards out there, and the director’s comic timing in this massive hit is top notch.
